Attention: Theft and Stowaway Incidents at Indonesian Ports

In case of vessel's upcoming call at Indonesian ports, we would like to alert you to the increasing frequency of theft and stowaway incidents that have occurred in the area. These incidents are particularly common while the vessel is anchored and waiting for its turn to berth alongside.

To ensure the safety and security of the crew and vessel, we recommend that you review our company's circulars and advise the crew to remain vigilant throughout their time at port.

In addition, we advise that you take the following precautions:

  • Arrange for double night watches to be stationed and ensure all areas that could potentially be used for theft or as hiding places are secure. This includes securing ropes and small items, tools, spares, D/G, lifeboat supplies, EPIRB, magnetic compass upper bridge, and any other exposed safety items.
  • Conduct a thorough search of all spaces, including chain lockers, mooring ropes, and any other areas that stowaways could potentially hide, from the bow to stern and from the engine room bilges to the top of the funnel and masts. This should be done carefully both prior to the vessel's departure and immediately after the pilot disembarks.
  • Collect and secure indoor items from lifeboat supplies and other easily removable items.
  • Ensure that external doors leading to accommodation or the engine room are secured from the inside with a padlock or turnbuckle.
  • Secure all paint store rooms, CO2 rooms, and other storage areas.
  • Guard one entrance to the accommodation 24 hours per day, leaving the deck crew to be divided into two 12-hour watches for better control of the vessel.

Please note that the above measures are not exhaustive and we encourage you to take any other necessary precautions that you deem fit, based on your experience. The safety and security of the crew and vessel is of the utmost importance, and we trust that you will take all necessary steps to ensure a safe and successful voyage.
